In my journey, I’ve naturally gravitated towards being a mediator and confidant, driven by genuine care. I create a safe, non-judgmental environment where others feel comfortable sharing. This way of being has lead me to a career in psychology counselling and art therapy, where I am able to facilitate growth and witness the resiliency of my clients as we begin to understand their past, navigate the present, and set future goals. I have often been drawn to both the arts and psychology, and started my journey as a mental health professional after obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in art therapy from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I later pursued a Master’s in Counselling Psychology; Art Therapy, from Adler University in Vancouver, which gave me the foundation to practice both counselling and art therapy. I find that creative collaboration when unpacking whatever may bring a client into the session is a natural part of the progression of our therapeutic time together. I have had years of experience which have included working with groups and individuals in recovery from substance abuse, folks living with developmental disabilities, indigenous recovery circles, and groups exploring the healing modalities of various expressive art therapies. I offer a compassionate, person-centered approach to healing in a comfortable and confidential environment. As a client, this means you will receive a level of care that allows you to feel seen, understood, and supported in a session that is tailored to your needs and concerns. Although I come from an arts-oriented background, I primarily work from a CBT, Narrative, or attachment- focused approach with a holistic focus. In my sessions, I consider all mental and social factors at work in a client’s life rather than just focusing on symptoms of a possible disorder. With this in mind, the approaches I use in sessions will often consider early attachment experiences, current relationship dynamics or patterns, and how various thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected. Counselling has been such a helpful tool for me in navigating my own life’s challenges and I strongly believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship. I have been blessed with counsellors who have taught me strategies for navigating difficult emotions, unhelpful thoughts, and challenging experiences in my life. My time as a client has contributed to the counsellor I am today and I’m more than happy to continue to pass the knowledge and techniques down to help others reach their goals. I consider inclusivity, cultural competence, gender-affirming, and trauma-informed care a few of many ethical requirements in my personal and professional practice. I am a certified counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCC) with a professional membership with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) and the BC Art Therapy Association (BCATA) currently pending for approval. One of my favourite artists, Frida Kahlo once said “I am my own muse, I am the subject I know best. The subject I want to know better.” - and this is so accurate to all our individual experiences, and as a counsellor I assist in the strengthening of client’s self-understanding, acceptance, and empowerment. I extend a heartfelt invitation for you to share your narrative with me, fostering a collaborative journey towards achieving your aspirations.

I understand what it is like to feel alone, and I don’t want people to feel alone as they navigate their mental health journey. As a counsellor, I am trauma-informed and strength-based, with a primary focus on bringing awareness to my client’s resiliency and resourcefulness. I mainly work from a person-centred perspective, where I approach each therapeutic relationship from a collaborative standpoint, which includes respecting that all my clients will have their own unique pace. I believe there is immense power in humour, expression, and being in connection to others and our bodies. In my work, I also integrate other modalities, such as Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Art-based Therapy, Somatic Therapy, Eco-Therapy, and Mindfulness. I have significant experience working with Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, Substance Use, Process Addictions, ADHD, FASD, Eating Disorders, Self-harm, and Suicidal Ideation. However, I believe it is an honour and privilege to work on whatever my client needs, and that nothing should be considered taboo in counselling!

Outside of work, I spend a great deal of my time being outdoors with my dog, Foxie, who you may see around the office. I was a high-level artistic swimmer, and now coach to continue my connection with artistic swimming community. I am a feminist, and continuously work at being an ally to the Queer and BIPOC populations. I have experience working with Indigenous people and actively participate in any ceremonies or practices I am invited to. In preparing to work with Indigenous clients, I completed the San’yas Anti-Racism Indigenous Cultural Safety Training, and I am always actively seeking new learning opportunities. I strongly believe in lifelong learning and am currently working on completing my Associate’s Certificate in Complex Trauma at the Justice Institute of BC.

As a mental health therapist, I understand how intimidating it can be to seek out a counsellor. Having navigated this journey myself, I know the importance of finding a therapist who offers a safe, judgment-free space and who utilizes practical tools for moving forward. That’s why I prioritize creating a collaborative environment in our sessions, integrating psychoeducation to keep you informed. I aim for our sessions to not only be productive and rewarding but also comforting and cozy. I have extensive experience working with individuals facing challenges such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, OCD, disordered eating, BPD,body image, self confidence, burnout, relationship issues, and breakups. I believe that you are the expert on your own life and my role is to provide you with the tools and support to help you reach your goals. My therapeutic approach combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and a person-centered framework when working with clients while also recognizing the importance of an individualized treatment plan. This can be particularly useful for helping with emotional regulation, recognizing unhelpful thinking patterns, finding healthy coping mechanisms, all or nothing thinking, validating beliefs and emotions, and many more. Outside of counselling, I love spending time with my senior rescue dog, Bianca, diving into a good book or studying as I am currently pursuing more education. I proudly identify as a feminist and an ally to the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities, and I’m committed to supporting all individuals on their journey to mental wellness.

Counselling

As your counselor, I am ready to walk beside you on a path to a more fulfilling and connected life. Having had the privilege to work with hundreds of people in my role as a clinical nutritionist, I recognize the profound impact that exploring the roots of our story can have on our emotional and physical healing. My practical knowledge started in the nutrition field, focused on healing the physical body by creating a more informed and deeper connection with how we fuel ourselves when hormonal imbalances and digestive dysfunction manifest. After graduating from my initial diploma program and working in the field for years with clients I became fascinated with how our thoughts and life experiences show up within the body, creating digestive and hormonal adaptations. Working with tools like GI maps, Dutch tests and mineral analysis informed me of just how much of an impact stress creates on paper, let alone with symptomatology like PMS, autoimmune disorders, and unexplainable digestive dysfunction. My one-on-one client experience, as well as my personal journey of stepping into my authenticity, led me to pursue my counseling diploma and transition my practice over to the exploration of the self and the story that brought us here.

My work with clients utilizes a trauma-informed, attachment-based approach. While we explore what is happening in your life right now (challenges with relationships to others and ourselves, shame, perfectionism, eating disorders, overwhelming coping mechanisms), we also explore what happened to you. I lean on integrating the tools and techniques from many different modalities and theories such as somatic therapy, parts work, acceptance and commitment therapy, narrative therapy, and DBT. With that being said my practice is strengths-based and person-centered, which means the most important tool in my toolbox is creating a non-judgemental space for you to feel validated in your shares. I am sex work-affirming and committed to supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences, ensuring that they feel seen, heard, and respected in their healing journey. Together, we’ll look at how your belief systems and past experiences impact you today and co-create a way forward that supports your needs.

Nutrition

I’ve worked in the functional wellness world for 5 years as a nutritionist and my practice is centered around uncovering the “why” behind digestive distress, painful periods, and chronic fatigue.

My biggest goal as your nutritionist is to support you in creating a more informed and deeper connection with how you fuel yourself to work with the roots of those physical imbalances.

I’m here to empathetically listen, search for answers, and co-create a sustainable plan, that supports you living your life, instead of enduring it.

I am passionate about the work I do as a counsellor, and I find immense joy and learning through my journey in this profession. As an immigrant from a collectivist community, I understand the incredible strength that comes from having support and how crucial it is to resilience. Navigating the complexities of fitting a collectivistic perspective into an individualistic society has shaped my approach to therapy, guiding me to create a sense of community and support for those who feel isolated. My foremost goal as a therapist is to ensure you feel safe and supported. I have extensive experience working with individuals who have faced trauma, abuse, and violence. The therapeutic tools I use are tailored to your unique needs and goals for therapy. While I provide education and perspective, I believe you are the expert in your own life. One of my favourite storytellers, Brené Brown, said, “Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage.” My aim is to create a therapeutic space where you feel empowered to embrace vulnerability, allowing yourself to be truly seen and heard. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, PTSD, abuse, culture shock, stress (academic, work-related, parenting), body image issues, and fostering self-compassion. The tools I incorporate into my practice include DBT skills, CBT techniques, Sensorimotor techniques, Narrative practices, and Parts-work. I offer services in both English and Hindi, and I am here to walk with you on your journey towards healing and growth. Hello and Welcome!      Thank you for taking the time to read a little about me! My name is Kylee Smith (she/her), and I am a Registered Counselling Therapist Candidate (RCT-C) with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists and a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.      My approach is informed by my belief that we are all human, with a story, life experiences and struggles of our own. I understand how hard it can be to have a human mind that constructs various emotions, unhelpful thoughts and confusions that make us feel stuck and overwhelmed. However, if we can foster a greater connection to our identity, experiences, emotions and thoughts, we can nurture an environment that fosters growth, adaption, healing and decision-making.

I work with individuals across the lifespan through a client-centred, culturally-sensitive and socially-just lens, that recognizes and appreciates the unique intersectionalities of each client. I believe that therapy is a collaborative process, built on the foundations of trust, flexibility, accountability and respect. As your therapist I will strive to create a non-judgmental, welcoming environment in which you feel safe, supported and valued, as my goal is to be a compassionate and empathetic support on your journey of healing and wellness.      My therapeutic style is generated through the lens of attachment theory, I believe that supporting clients as they identify their needs, can establish the foundations for trust, affect regulation and interpersonal relationships. I have a great deal of experience working with clients who are experiencing concerns related to depression, anxiety, trauma, self-image, gender identity and sexuality, ADHD, OCD, as well as emotional, sexual and physical abuse. My practice is rooted in a trauma informed, feminist and anti-oppressive lens and integrates Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, narrative, and mindfulness-based practices to support my clients in reaching their goals and promoting their welfare. Outside of work I spend a great deal of time exploring the beautiful nature around us, through activities like hiking, golfing and camping, as well as expressing myself through various modalities of art and fashion. I look forward to working with you, Kylee
